The time of day is the biggest clue, and it costs nothing to notice. Squirrels keep different hours from rats.
Daytime noise, and heavy noise. Squirrels are active in daylight, particularly early morning and late afternoon. Rats and mice are largely nocturnal.
A squirrel sounds like something with weight — rolling, thumping, dragging. A rat sounds like scurrying. A mouse sounds like scratching.
| When you hear it | Most likely |
|---|---|
| Early morning, around dawn | Squirrel (or nesting birds in spring) |
| Through the day | Squirrel |
| Late afternoon before dusk | Squirrel |
| Shortly after dark | Rat or mouse |
| Middle of the night | Rat or mouse |
| Constant, all hours | More than one thing, or a bird trapped |
Not absolute — a disturbed rat will move in daylight — but as a first indicator it is the most useful thing you have.
If it sounds like something is rolling a marble across your ceiling, it is very probably a squirrel.

| Sign | Squirrel | Rat |
|---|---|---|
| Droppings | Rounded, ~8–10mm, barrel-shaped | Tapered, ~12–18mm, spindle-shaped |
| Insulation | Torn up and heaped into a drey | Runs and tunnels through it |
| Gnawing | Timber, cabling, plastic, wide gnaw marks | Cabling and pipework, narrower marks |
| Nest | Bulky drey of insulation, leaves and twigs | Shredded nest in a corner |
| Entry point | Roof level — tiles, fascia, soffit | Any level, often lower |
| Smell | Usually little | Often noticeable ammonia |
Do not handle droppings. Photograph them and send the picture with your enquiry.
That last point matters here. In a terrace or a converted house the roof void may run further than your ceiling does, so the entry point can be over a neighbour's part of the building entirely.

In a converted house or a block it is frequently communal, which makes both the trapping and the roof repair the freeholder's or managing agent's responsibility. Check the lease and ask neighbours whether they are hearing it too before you commission anything.
In spring, yes — nesting birds in the eaves. Chirping and fluttering rather than movement across the ceiling. Some birds and their active nests are legally protected.
Possibly. All UK bats and their roosts are legally protected. If you suspect bats, stop and take specialist advice — nothing can be done that disturbs a roost.
Fairly. Gnawed cabling is a fire risk and squirrels gnaw continuously.
Loft inspections often turn up wasp nests — £90 fixed cost in Wealdstone, guaranteed.

Almost certainly a squirrel. They cache nuts, and nuts roll.
Squirrel droppings are rounded and barrel-shaped, around 8–10mm. Rat droppings are tapered and spindle-shaped, 12–18mm.
Not yet. A squirrel sealed in gnaws out through something softer, usually a ceiling.
No. It is not the route for squirrels, and an animal dying in a void creates its own problem.

Tell us the time of day you hear it and send a photo of any droppings. That usually settles it.
