There is one question that settles this almost every time: is the damage where people walk, or where they do not?
Very likely. Ordinary wear appears where people walk — in the middle of a room, along a route. Carpet moth damage appears where they do not: at the edges, in corners, under furniture.
The location is the diagnostic. Thinning along a skirting, behind a door or under a sofa is not wear, because nobody has ever walked there.
Wear happens where feet go. Fabric-pest damage happens where they do not. So the question is not what the damage looks like — it is where it is.
| Where the damage is | Almost certainly |
|---|---|
| Middle of a hallway | Wear |
| Along a walked route between doors | Wear |
| In front of a sofa or armchair | Wear |
| Along the skirting | Fabric pest |
| Under a sofa or wardrobe | Fabric pest |
| In a corner behind an open door | Fabric pest |
| Under a rug | Fabric pest |
| Under a window in strong sun | Possibly sun bleaching — check for pile loss |
Get down at the damaged edge with a torch and look for:
If instead you find brown bristly larvae and shed skins, that is a carpet beetle. Similar damage, comparable treatment, different search.

View Carpet Moth Control Wealdstone →Carpet moths need keratin, which means natural animal fibres. If your carpet is polypropylene or nylon, they are not the cause and something else is happening.
How to check: wool feels warmer and softer, and a single fibre held to a flame chars and smells of burnt hair rather than melting into a hard bead. If you rent, the letting agent or landlord may know. If it is a wool-rich blend, it is at risk in proportion to the wool content.
Three reasons, all of them about being left alone:
Add a warm flat with central heating on for six months of the year, and the edge of a wool carpet is close to ideal habitat.
Edge damage in one room means checking the edges in all of them, particularly where the carpet runs continuously. Damage lags infestation by months, so a room with no visible damage may still have larvae.

A carpet fitter can sometimes patch a small area if offcuts exist. Deal with the infestation first, or the patch goes the same way.
Months. Which is why finding debris rather than bare patches is the outcome you want.
Not for treatment purposes. Treatment works with the carpet in place.
An entirely different pest, same clear pricing — wasp nest treatment in Wealdstone is £90 fixed cost, guaranteed.
Almost certainly not wear. Wear appears where people walk; fabric-pest damage appears where they do not.
Look at the damaged edge with a torch for gritty debris, silk webbing and small cream larvae.

Yes. Carpet moths need keratin from natural fibres — synthetic carpet is not at risk.
Nobody walks there, nobody vacuums there properly, and furniture never moves.
Sun causes colour change without pile loss. Fabric-pest damage removes pile.

Tell us what you found and whether the carpet is wool. A photograph of a larva settles the identification.
